Upper-level addition, Private Villa
Canacona, Goa

This is a proposed first floor addition on an existing single storey villa. The client is the owner of a textile boutique store nearby, and is a graduate of design from one of the top institutions in the country.

The existing villa is beautifully kept and maintained, along with a lush green front garden, overlooking paddy fields across the plot boundary.

The addition is proposed using lightweight steel structural sections so as to not overload the existing slab and load-bearing masonry walls, incorporating an open-plan living-dining-kitchen space flanked by a continuous open deck facing the garden and greenery below. This deck serves as the main focal space of the first floor — acting as a buffer between the exterior and interior spaces.

This continuous deck serves additional functions — shading the internal walls from direct sunlight and heating, as well as allowing pleasant breezes and good natural ventilation int the internal spaces; perfect to counter the humid tropical weather typical for most of the year.
