Private Residence

Meppayur

Meppayur, Kozhikode District

This is a proposed residence for a young family of four; the owner runs a photography studio and had an interesting brief of wanting to ‘feel the rain’ inside the house.

This was a very welcome requirement to us, as this meant creating spaces within the interior that were open to the outside— sheltered from the sun but having ample daylight and natural air flow throughout.

The design got underway by utilising a slight difference in the ground level (of approx 3 ft.) in the site, and planning an entry into the house from the lower to the upper level, along an open linear courtyard.

This courtyard serves as an open buffer space between the outer living area and inner family spaces; the narrow opening on top of this courtyard allows rainfall inside, and the groundwater gets recharged according to the natural slope of the site.

This allows for natural cooling of the interiors, eliminating the need for air conditioning for most of the year; thereby saving considerable energy and reducing the environmental footprint of the house to a great extent.
