Private Residence
Mundikalthazham, Kozhikode District
The design had to satisfy specific space requirements with regard to ‘Vastu’ as the land was located within their larger extended family compound which also housed a small family shrine.
Wanting to economise on costs and also minimise the impact on the environment, the owners’ wishes readily aligned to our own, and a climatically responsive building was proposed.
This involved the use of large open spaces within the interior, an internal courtyard that was open to the sky, as well as timber-screened shutters and louvers to maximise natural ventilation and passive cooling, without the need for air-conditioning. Large overhangs provide sufficient shading from the sun and rain and help to cool the interiors overall.
