Retreat Housing
Peruvamba, Palakkad District
This project is a set of semi-private housing units near Palakkad, Kerala for members of a prominent non-governmental organization that promotes meditation along with a spiritual and harmonious living. The site is bordered by a seasonal natural pond, and this was an obvious starting point of the design. The project was envisioned in two phases, and the layout was designed with the pond acting as a focal element to where most of the views from the common areas were oriented.
The site being narrow and sloping downward towards the pond necessitated a linear design to allow for smooth circulation of pedestrians throughout the property. The ground floor is kept free and shaded for the residents to enjoy the proximity of the pond throughout the day; this space becomes a flexible area where community events may be occasionally held. The presence of the pond also acts as a calming influence over the whole site, and induces a feeling of harmony with the surrounding environment.
The upper levels are designed with the housing units facing the private side of the property towards the East and a connecting corridor facing the pond, which lies to the West. The corridor is designed as the primary and more intimate interaction space for the residents, and is provided with semi-shaded seating spaces. A screen with vertical strips for plant growth along the outer edge of the corridor is designed to provide sufficient shading from the Western Sun, and also provides partial visual privacy for the residents.
